Dog training, in its most effective form, is best pursued via positive re-enforcement. But there are several dog training techniques that fall into that category. One of the most passive but highly effective methods is a combination of the sense of smell and tasty treats; in my experience the smellier the better.
When you’re training a dog it is important to know you can get the animal’s undivided attention. This is sometimes a difficult task and the main reason for that is because your trusty pet has found a scent. The discovery of a smell so distracting it’s almost like your dog can’t hear you. As frustrating as it can be when you’re dog training it’s a common trait with all dogs; even well trained ones.
One of the best answers is to compete with all of the smells you may encounter on your daily walks and training sessions with a little trick of your own. It’s always good to have treats in your pocket whether you’re actively training a dog or not. But as dog training techniques go having something both tasty and smelly in your pocket is a killer. It’s only smelly to dogs though, people won’t point and talk about you.
A word of caution: this is an extremely effective dog training technique; so much so that you will attract the attention of other dogs. Whatever you do don’t feed them. You’ll only need to do it once and they’ll expect it every time they see you. You’ll still attract attention but not as much as if you start treating every dog you see.
So what is this dog training secret? It’s nothing more than a homemade treat called liver cake, but with an extra little twist. It’s really easy to make and will almost certainly make your dog training sessions much easier. Why? Because even if your dog is busy following a scent or intently sniffing a particular part of the ground it won’t matter. A soon as you pull a bag of liver cake out of your pocket it’ll be over like a jack rabbit with its tail on fire.
Here’s how to make it:
Take either half a pound to a pound of liver (any kind)
A heaped table spoon of corn flour (Please don’t use normal flour as many dogs are wheat intolerant)
One or two eggs; depending on the size of the eggs and the amount of liver.
The extra oomph comes from a couple of tea spoons of cod liver oil.
Put everything into a food processor and whizz it up. If it seems a bit runny then you can add a little more corn flour. It should have a cake mix consistency. Now you can either bake it in a loaf tin or cook it on the stove top in a frying pan like a big pancake. I generally cook it on the stove either with a bit of lard or after I’ve fried sausages.
Only use this when you are out and about and you want your dog to come back to you and also as a very effective dog training aid. Don’t just use it as a wholesale treat, you’re dog has to earn it. This highly effective dog training technique is truly amazing and can gain the undivided attention of even the most stubborn of dogs as they sit at your feet.
Add it to your dog training arsenal and you won’t be disappointed.
