Dog training electric shock collars have been banned in many countries in the world and rightly so. There is absolutely no need to resort to such brutal tactics when training a dog. It is accepted that there are certain specialist circumstances, such as avoiding venomous creatures like snakes, where such methods can be effective. But this can only be employed in a controlled environment by a trained and experienced practitioner.

If anyone feels the need or desire to resort to such treatment for basic dog training purposes then you should revisit and seriously re-consider the reasons why you wish to keep a dog.

Is the usage of an electric shock collar actually an effective dog training aid?

The shortest, easiest answer to that question is yes. Without a doubt they are efficient as dog training aids. They allow for a prompt attention getter when training a dog and they almost certainly create a negative reinforcement that will teach the dog which behaviors are unacceptable.

But, as with all things, there’s a great deal more to think about than simply the initial, visible benefits. In this article, we’ll discuss the respective benefits and problems encountered by employing such a device.

We’ll start with how these devices actually operate. The electric, or shock collar, as they’re typically named is essentially a receiver. On activation it delivers an electrical stimulant (shock) to the skin around the neck area of a dog through two probes. In early training the charge is moderately low-pitched but consistent until the dog discovers that demonstrating acceptable behaviors can cut off the stimulation. When the dog has realised how and why the collar functions the charge is not applied continuously but instead the reverse is the case.

They’re employed solely to deter inappropriate behaviors by rendering a clear-cut and uniform message through the collars electrical probes. So why would anyone utilise them and are they effective or not?

The obvious reason for employing an electric shock collar is the ability to control the dog from long distances without being forced to shout or use noise-producing techniques.

This is especially efficient with dogs that are used around cattle or in surroundings where excess noise is unacceptable, such as hunting ground. The long distance control also creates a non-threatening attitude with your dog as the collar imposes the rules instead of you being forced to get physical or intimidating when adjusting behavior. (Authors note: Any type of physical or intimidating techniques is the most likely reason a dog misbehaves)

On the other hand, trusting the device at long distance could also be a disadvantage. Why? Because at a respectable length, you risk the dog moving out of range of the transmitter and avoiding the electrical stimulus while you lose your dog, let alone a really expensive bit of training equipment.

A different disadvantage to the electric  shock collar is the prohibitive price. With them frequently falling into the $100 or more price range; they’re not for everybody. This is something to consider while thinking about the upkeep and the costs of any loss via a dog that learns how to remove the collar or break it loose.

Another advantage to this dog training system is the acceleration pace of the training for particular behaviors. A lot of owners claim to reduce their training time in half through the employment of an electric shock collar for training a dog  such commands as “come”, “get out” or “down.” That small fact alone is adequate enough to induce numerous new trainers to carefully deliberate the use the training aid.

Yet, there’s a different disadvantage. After all, the fundamental principles behind the device are that it will inflict at least a measure of pain upon your pet. Ultimately, the solution to the original question is yes, they are effective tools, but as with any tool, they have their uses and abuses. This tool could comprise a great asset if employed properly or it can ruin a good dog if applied incorrectly. When all is said and done, it’s the duty of each owner and trainer to decide whether or not it’s a tool that suits his or her dog training techniques and manner after applying their research and well-grounded judgment.
